Performance Training looks to improve an athlete’s potential in their sport by improving their physical and mental qualities. Considerations like proper nutrition and recovery are essential to help athlete’s achieve their highest potential while staying injury free.

Essential

To excel as a soccer player, you have to be able to meet the demands of the game.  This includes, but is not limited to sprinting, accelerating/ decelerating, change of direction, jumping/landing, and cognitive abilities such as decision making.  All of these requirements for success can be developed, improved, and trained.  To do so, you need to understand fundamentals of both the game of soccer and training principles to build from a foundational level to the top of the pyramid.

Foundations

Strength is the essential foundation upon which an athlete's abilities are developed.  Your sprinting speed is essentially the ability to push the weight of your body through space faster than your opponent.  This is oversimplified and considerations like your body weight, running mechanics, and muscle fiber type distribution (type 1 vs type 2) all must be considered.  Similarly, your jumping ability results from your ability to create vertical force off the ground to win a header.  More directly, your strength and balance are needed when you are shoulder to shoulder with an opponent battling to win possession of the ball. If you are looking to improve your game, strength is a great place to start... but maybe not how you think...
